SKC’s Fluid Dynamic Bearing Motor brings a new
spin to colorwheel technology.

Los Angeles, CA – September 27th, 2005 – Shinano Kenshi Corporation, one of the world’s leading OEM motor manufacturers and producers of fluid dynamic bearing (FDB) motors, is introducing a new, cost-effective FDB motor, designed especially for the DLP (Texas Instruments) television market.

“That’s one of our key directives,” Rex Bergsma, President of the North American subsidiary explains. “We take our proven expertise in one area and see how we can apply it specifically to another industry.” In this case, SKC is able to utilize the “proven performance and reliability” of their existing FDB motor and apply it to the DLP colorwheel motor design. “The SKC FDB colorwheel motor is based on the same FDB technology used in our polygon scanner motors for the laser printer and office peripheral industries. “SKC has manufactured and sold millions of FDB motors.

Our ongoing reliability tests for the polygon scanner motor have surpassed 30,000hrs at 30krpm,” Bergsma revealed. “SKC can offer these motors to the DLP television market with tremendous confidence. The SKC FDB Colorwheel motor is specifically designed for the demanding requirements of the DLP projection television applications.”

Great advantages

The success of SKC’s fluid dynamic bearing technology has allowed the company to create a motor with great advantages for the industry.

The SKC colorwheel motor provides reduced noise, longer life, higher temperature tolerance, improved stiffness, lower vibration, higher speed, high performance, and lower costs than competing technologies.

A minimum life of 30,000 hrs can be expected with SKC’s FDB colorwheel motor. The motor is available in 14mm and 24mm versions, so it can accommodate a wide range of colorwheel diameters. Globally, SKC plans on providing millions of these types of motors to the colorwheel market.

The advantage of the SKC FDB motor is the fluid dynamic bearing. Within the interior surface of the oil-impregnated sintered bronze construction, herringbone grooves create lubricating hydrodynamic journals on which the shaft rotates.

“Our factory has done a great job creating a product that can help a particular industry, that can run incredibly smooth and offer a real price value.”

Our only business.

In recent years SKC has gained incredible inroads in other industries by developing, innovative, cost-saving products by focusing on motors and pouring into their development and improved technology. SKC is a leading motor manufacturer in the automotive market, and the medical field, while maintaining its strength in the office and computer peripheral markets.

“Motors are our only business,” Bergsma explains. Shinano Kenshi Corporation specializes in: customized motor assemblies, DC brushless motors, servo, and stepper motors. “Because our focus is only on motors, we can offer more motor related custom assemblies than any other motor manufacturer in the world. In fact, nearly one third of revenues are derived from our custom motor assembly sales.”

With state-of-the-art production facilities in Japan and China and with other operations in North America and Europe, we compete on a global basis. “We have developed a reputation as an aggressive, dynamic, hard working company dedicated to customer service and delivering on our promises over and over again.”

Better solutions.

SKC’s ability to offer customized engineering and production even under the most difficult challenges has earned the company the reputation as a true innovator in the motion control field.

This is in part what distinguishes SKC - our ability to capitalize on new technologies that we developed for one industry and can apply to another. This new “colorwheel” motor is a perfect example. “It shows that SKC provides better solutions, more value, and works harder for our customers.”

Prestigious awards from Fortune 500 companies speak to SKC’s engineering prowess and manufacturing quality standards.
